Durarara!! 02 and Dance in the Vampire Bund 02
We have a double-whammy for you, today.
Getting back into the groove of things, yeah baby. Also, Anirena deciding to be gay is not our fault. Nobody’s going to click their damn ads, anyway.
Oh yeah, and you’re probably looking for Bund, too, or something. So here you go.
See you next week! ~rintaun

Thanks for Durara!! (:
@Wesley: No problem. At least you seem to be aware which is the better show.
hell yeah, you’re effing right… Durr durr is much better than the loli, flat chested (because she is a frigging loli) vampire princess…
THX for durr durr… waiting for the next ep. (it’s not like I’m pushing you for the next ep. or sumthing like that…yeah?)
Hehe — do you dislike it, or just like Durara!! more? o:
Both!
Any word on when Durarara!! 03 will be out?
Also thx for your works.
This two shoes are probably the only interesting ones this season so congrats for choosing well.
I haven’t made many comparisons and thorough checking of Durara translation yet but i did for Vampire Bund. I always to this kind of thing in search of the best fansubbing group.
Look guys am gonna be honest with you. I like your translations so i have to say i was disappointed by this one. It’s not horrible or anything but the Chihiro release of the first episode seemed more correct to me and the SFW on this second one phrased many things more accurately than you guys. Gammon i know you can do better. Just a little more careful on the details.(no am not talking through my ass, i have quite a good understanding of Japanese)
Your video quality seems better though so congrats for that. The fonds are better too.
Btw why don’t you use 720p upscale? Yeah it’s just an upscale but it still looks better doesn’t it, and that’s all that matters really.
“Shows” not shoes, sorry for that. Annoying “W”, why are you next to “E” on the keyboard? No edit button ether.
@Monad: I don’t even know where to begin with responding to you. The “shoe” typo is hardly your only error, and perhaps one of the least important.
Well, let’s start with the issue of the upscale. No, a 720p upscale does not look better. Nothing upscaled looks better. In fact, logically, it is only possible for an upscaled image to look *worse* than the original, or, at the very least, approximately the same quality. This is due to the fact that in order to upscale an image, you must infer data which didn’t already exist; sometimes this works, others it does not. Considering that Bund airs at horrendous quality to begin with, upscaling is out of the question.
Also, to all viewers, it’s Durarara (that’s THREE “ra”s there); I don’t know if you’re shortening it because you’re lazy or can’t read, but there are in fact three.
Next thing, Monad, is about your initial statement about these two shows being the only interesting ones this season… I only half agree with you. Durarara is interesting. Bund is inane. It’s a show that exists simply because they wanted to write a story featuring a most-often naked loli vampire princess. That’s the only reason I can imagine that anyone would watch it, because other than that, the theme songs and characters are, so far, extremely stereotypical, not even up to par of many other shows of a similar genre. The plot has more holes than swiss cheese, and is about as enjoyable as getting your balls pinched by a lobster. The only reason anybody watches it is because there’s a naked little vampire girl in it, and on each episode I translation check, I suffer through every frame.
That said, however, we put everything into making our scripts as perfect as we can. I’m going to call bullshit on you knowing any Japanese aside from perhaps some basic greetings and “baka”. Unless you’d like to cite some specific examples and have a discussion on the “accuracy” of particular translations, get the fuck out.
Thanks.

Why did u delete my post?
I don’t recall being rude or sumthing like that. I just said, that Dance in the Vampire Bund’s p bad show, and durarara’s much better… nothing will change my mind about this.
and i don’t care, delete this post too… but still, THANK YOU for subbing durarara, your release is the best so far…
pls, ignore what i wrote above… i guess ffox’s joking me… that foxy browser tricked me…
We were going well until the “fuck you” jumped in. I just said my opinion with out insulting you, i believe you could do the same. It’s not like i made a troll post calling you names and saying you suck or anything. I actually said i like your translations. And i made clear that i was talking only about a few details and didn’t think it was bad. Like in 2:35 on the first episode or on episode 2 at 12:58 when you wrote about missiles with out him mentioning the word(BTW i have to say that the second episode was a good work mostly it was the first episode i was talking about).
I get that there are annoying people just being rude but i only wrote a small criticism pushing for that 100% perfect. Actually i only wrote it because you are the guys i usually prefer and i kind of have high expectations. No need to be DB like in guys like me who are actually fans of your work.
If you noticed i cut the names of both titles, so yes i know how it’s written, am not blind. I did it on purpose.
I agree that Vampire loli hasn’t lived up to the expectations until now, but i said what i said about this two shows because they seem to be the only ones that are not the usual comedy, harem, moe this year.
About the 720p upscale. Yes many groups say similar things but whenever i find an upscaled 720p Raw version it looks better. No matter what theory you apply in your argument, what is obvious with the naked eye is simply obvious. Still as i said am quite pleased with your quality so don’t get all angry on me.
Sup Monad, I didn’t think he was insulting you as much as he was trying to reason with you. Anyway, you got through almost all of the passage before the “gtfo” part, which wasn’t even taken in context. So can we be at least more civilized here? Thanks.
@Monad: Please note that I did not say “fuck you,” I said “get the fuck out.” I’m not mentioning this to deride or mock you, only because it actually will tie in with our discussion: how things are phrased is very, very important.
I’m going to be upfront with you; I still don’t believe that you have any significant level of Japanese, as your response did nothing to suggest that. However, I will proceed with this discussion assuming that you do.
I have to disagree with you on both lines that you mentioned. I’ll start with the 12:58 line in episode 2, where I “wrote about missiles with out him mentioning the word,” because it’s a much easier decision to address. You’re absolutely right. They do not use the word missile in the original Japanese. However, as you should know, Japanese is an extremely high context language, which means that you can say very little and get a lot of meaning across. English, on the other hand, is the opposite: a very low context language. You must say much more in order to get the same meaning across. In Japanese you may see the exchange A「すーぱーに行きましたか」 B「ええ、行きました。」. Translating extremely literally, this exchange would translate to “Went to supermarket?” “Yes, went.” These are obviously not acceptable English, and so we must explicitly add those words which are understood by context in Japanese, to get the less eye-bleeding lines “Did you go to the supermarket?” “Yes, I did.” This is the first principle of translation: literal and 1:1 translations very rarely exist, and even if they technically do, they likely sound unnatural in the target language.
Well, that obviously doesn’t quite address the question of missiles, but I’m getting there. Just for reference for the peanut gallery, our line was “Even so, straight to missiles?!” while both SFW and Chihiro (which uses SFW’s scripts as a base) put “So why did they do that all of a sudden?!” The line in Japanese is 「だからって、いきなりあれかよ?!」. The word “that” in SFW/Chihiro’s translation corresponds to the word “missiles” used in ours. And yes, Monad, you are right, “that” is the literal translation. However, like I said, Japanese is high-context, and so they can use the word あれ in many more situations and have it still sound natural. In English, in this situation, I would argue that it doesn’t sound natural. I chose to translate あれ as “missiles” because “missiles” was ultimately the thing to which “that” was referring, and I believe that it sounds much more natural. Furthermore, I would argue that our line, while sounding more natural, actually corresponds much more to the original Japanese line than the SFW/Chihiro translation. First and foremost, the question being asked by our wonderful protagonist, Akira, is not a “why” question, which is normally asked using one of several words: どうして、なぜ、なんで or perhaps occasionally some others. You will notice that none of these words exist in the original line; as such, we can tell it was not a “why” question. The answer to “why” was already answered in the previous line spoken by Mina: “Yes, there are many after my life. Humans and otherwise.” (Koharubi, 12:50). This is obviously the answer to “why” missiles were shot at them. No, Akira is instead posing an incredulous question, which could literally be translated as “Because of that, *that* all of a sudden?!” He is, then, shocked over the sudden use of missiles (that is to say, before anything else), rather than wondering about why. I chose in this case to keep the original meaning and substitute the word “missiles” for the pronoun “that” that had been referencing it.
Okay, well, now that that wall of text is done, allow me to address your other line, 2:35 in the first episode. Because it is split differently, I will cite the full line all at once instead of individual chunks. Our line was “Tonight on Scales of Astraia, our judges will weigh in on live broadcast, separating fact from fiction.” while SFW used “Here we are, ladies and gentlemen. Splitting mysteries and legends in half, live from the studio! This is the show that measures the truth, Astraea’s Balance!” Chihiro’s was very similar to SFW’s, as can be expected as they use SFW’s script as a base.
The first thing I can say about this line is that SFW translated it much more literally. Ours was instead rephrased, for multiple reasons. The first of these reasons was the length of the line; we try to keep lines relatively the same length as the original utterance, or at least close. The other main reason was the order of everything. Our line is rearranged to fit the more typical order of English sentences, while SFW’s retains the original Japanese order. The only major differences in translation were made by each group based on the order of words chosen. Finally, the difference of “Astraia” versus “Astraea” is somewhat trivial; I chose to use the Greek spelling, they chose to use the Latin spelling. Latin is generally the preferred spelling in English, but Japanese tends more toward the original language.
This is the only other thing I’ll say regarding a 720p upscale of this show:
[19:25] < &Zor> Your video quality seems better though so congrats for that. The fonds are better too.
[19:25] < &Zor> HAHA
[19:25] < &Zor> YEAH
[19:25] < &Lefty> lol
[19:25] < &Zor> my encode is probably the best of the current groups subbing it tbh
[19:25] < &rintaun> yeah, he said the encode was good
[19:25] < &rintaun> but
[19:25] < &Zor> the only worthy competitor is chihiro (Mauneydy-kun)
[19:25] < &rintaun> “why don’t you do 720p upscale?”
[19:25] < &rintaun> lol
[19:25] < &Zor> LOL
[19:25] < &Zor> LOL
[19:25] < &rintaun> “Btw why don’t you use 720p upscale? Yeah it’s just an upscale but it still looks better doesn’t it, and that’s all that matters really.”
[19:26] < &Zor> HAHAHA
[19:26] < &Lefty> < &rintaun> “Btw why don’t you use 720p upscale? Yeah it’s just an upscale but it still looks better doesn’t it, and that’s all that matters really.”
[19:26] < &Lefty> oh god
[19:26] < &rintaun> yeah.
[19:26] < &Lefty> lets upscale at-x
[19:26] < &Lefty> guys
[19:26] < &Zor> I lol’d irl
@Monad: Oftentimes, slang and colloquialism will give rise to misunderstandings if one is not familiar with their usage.
In this instance, “gtfo” is more in line with “you’ve gotta be kidding me” or “I’m not taking you seriously”. This is totally different from “fuck you”, where the meanings and intent can’t be mistaken even if one is unfamiliar with the language.
@パチンコ: Don’t worry about it; sometimes the blog requires an administrator to approve a comment before it’s displayed, so it doesn’t always display immediately.
Anyway, thanks for the appreciation! We really like hearing from our viewers.
Oh wait, Durarara!! has three ra’s :/. I never knew. I was like, WHY CANT I FIND ANYTHING ON TOKYOTOSHO. STUPID SEARCH FUNCTION. But it has three ra’s. ;_;
